New 2016 Jeep Renegade

2016 Jeep Renegade Overview

  • Debuted as a new model last year
  • Subcompact SUV is the smallest vehicle in Jeep’s lineup
  • Available removable roof panels
The 2016 Jeep Renegade returns again after its debut last year with some very slight changes.

For 2016, the Renegade gets a few minor updates; a BeatsAudio system is newly available, as are rain-sensing wipers and two new exterior colors. Everything else is held constant, including the exterior styling which remains unique. The Renegade looks like nothing else we’ve seen before. The seven-slot grille up front lets you know that it’s a Jeep but the rest of the Renegade is pretty funky. Black cladding runs along the entire bottom portion of the exterior on all models giving it a more rugged appearance. The Renegade shares a platform with the Fiat 500L so it has a very small overall footprint, but it’s also pretty tall which helps to open up the interior a bit. 16-inch wheels come standard, with 17- and 18-inch wheels optional. Trailhawk models add extra ground clearance, skid plates, and a pair of red tow hooks upfront which upgrade the Renegade’s off-road potential. Also available is the “My Sky” roof option, which has two fiberglass panels that can be removed manually or are powered on some models, offering open air motoring similar to the Wrangler.

US versions of the Renegade have two engine options. A 160-hp, turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine is standard, while a larger 180-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder is available. The smaller engine is only offered with a six-speed manual transmission; you’ll have to upgrade to the larger engine to get the nine-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, with a four-wheel drive system optional. The Trailhawk gets its own standard four-wheel drive system that adds a rock crawl mode and hill-descent control.

Inside the Renegade offers seating for five and 18.5 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats which can be expanded slightly via a standard removable cargo floor. Jeep has done good work on the Renegade’s interior; it is a big jump up in terms of design and execution from the previous bottom end products in Jeep’s lineup (Liberty and Patriot). Standard features include air conditioning, USB port, a tilt/telescope steering wheel, cloth upholstery, and power windows/locks. The Renegade offers a pair of optional UConnect systems, one with a 5-inch touchscreen and the other a 6.5-inch touchscreen. UConnect 5.0 adds Bluetooth connectivity and satellite radio, while UConnect 6.5 tacks navigation, HD radio, and voice command recognition on top of that. A 115-volt plug is also optional. There are four available trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk.

Standard safety features include seven airbags, antilock brakes, and electronic stability control. There is also plenty of available safety technology including forward collision warnings, lane departure warnings, blind spot warnings, and a rearview camera.
