New 2017 FIAT 124 Spider

2017 FIAT 124 Spider Overview

New/Notable
  • All-new model for 2017
  • Shares its platform with the Mazda MX-5 Miata
  • Abarth trim level has stiffer suspension
The 2017 FIAT 124 Spider is an all-new compact roadster that shares its platform with the Mazda MX-5 Miata. Although the 124 Spider has an Italian-inspired design, it is actually assembled in Japan. It has three trims available: the Classica, Lusso, and Abarth.

Overall, the 124 Spider looks friendlier and less aggressive than its MX-5 Miata counterpart. The sporty front-end features a hexagonal grille, teardrop-shaped headlights, and a segmented lower fascia. The rear-end has a boxier, broader appearance than the MX-5. The Abarth version looks much more aggressive with its black-masked, wide-mouth lower fascia. 16-inch aluminum wheels come standard, while adaptive headlights, LED daytime running lamps, fog lights, heated side mirrors, 17-inch aluminum wheels, Brembo disc brakes, and a large bonnet racing stripe are available.

Under the hood, the 124 Spider is powered by a 165-hp, turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir 4-cylinder engine that produces 184 pounds-feet of torque mated to a standard 6-speed manual or optional automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Touring suspension with a double wishbone front and a multilink rear design gives a responsive feel to the 124 Spider. The Abarth comes with stiffer suspension for less body roll.

The sporty interior of the 124 Spider is virtually identical to the MX-5 with only few more leather-trim accents. The center stack features a standard audio system with a 3-inch display and Bluetooth connectivity. It can be upgraded with a 7-inch multimedia touchscreen, an integrated navigation system, and a Bose premium audio system. Two-tone leather seats, Alcantara Recaro seats, an automatic dimming rearview mirror, remote keyless entry, push-button start, and a leather-wrapped shift knob are available as well.

Standard safety features include front air bags, antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system. A blindspot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, and a backup camera are also available.
